Adaptive Growth

Background:

HPT Pharma (“HPT”) is a Warrington, Pennsylvania-based provider of packaging solutions for the pharmaceutical industry. For more than 15 years, pharmaceutical producers around the world have turned to HPT and its experience in the areas of blister machine tooling and blister packaging equipment. The company creates cost-effective pharmaceutical packaging options that bring together advanced design tools, industry knowledge and proven design methodologies to meet the most demanding specifications.

The Challenge:

A pharmaceutical packaging supplier approached HPT for assistance with a production-related obstacle. Among its many offerings, the company provides large “blister cards” designed to package and provide 30-day medication supplies. These cards are patient-specific, developed to ensure prescription compliance for individuals in long-term care situations.

With growing demand for the blister card products, the customer faced a need to increase throughput and capacity. They owned an additional blister packaging machine, but the fact that it was a different model and size than their primary equipment proved to be problematic. Given that each of the company’s 30 SKUs would require its own tooling—not to mention the need for additional, non-SKU-dependent tools—the second machine online appeared to be prohibitively expensive.

The Solution:

The client needed a supplier to resolve the engineering challenge and turn the project around quickly. The existing vendors they approached, however, were unable to respond quickly or cost effectively. They turned to HPT for the necessary technical expertise.

Following an assessment of the specific tooling needs, HPT worked together with the client’s engineers to resolve the situation and recommend solutions. In the end, HPT developed an innovative engineering solution; rather than creating a full complement of new tools, the company’s engineers designed tooling adapters for each machine station. In that way, the SKU-dependent tooling would be interchangeable between the new and existing machines.

The Benefits:

With the non-SKU-dependent tooling and the adapters delivered, the client effectively doubled its manufacturing capacity. Moreover, the HPT solution resulted in significant savings and increased machine efficiency. The solutions were manufactured and developed on a timely basis and at a reasonable price, and the implementation and operation were successful.

“HPT brought the necessary engineering and product development capabilities,” says the client’s director of procurement. “Maybe more importantly, they delivered value through personalized service, responsiveness, and quick turnaround at a reasonable price.”

“HPT prides itself on working with customers to truly understand their challenges and to craft innovative solutions that provide better operational performance and competitiveness,” says HPT President JM Hasson. “In that way, both parties thrive in the long run.”
